Doulas Deployed to Help Fill Outcome Gaps in Childbirth

Rolanda Lister, M.D., is working to bridge the gap in pregnancy outcomes through a novel educational program aimed at uniting doulas and medical doctors in obstetrics cases.

Black women overall have worse birthing outcomes than white women, yet many distrust traditional medical institutions. Pairing doctors with the more familiar doulas may help smooth out those relationships, according to data from a pilot published in the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities.
